George Strait’s career is legendary. He is known as the King of Country Music for good reason. That title fits him as well as his Wranglers and boots. He has more number one hits than any other recording artist in any genre. Early in his career, his “neotraditional” style of country music helped to swing country radio away from the poppy sounds of the 80s.

Over the past 30 years or so, Strait has done very few interviews. When his eldest daughter Jennifer died in a car accident in 1986 George “kind of shut down” he didn’t want to discuss his loss with the press. So, he has spoken more through his music than anything else. Luckily, we still have some great quotes from the King.

George Strait’s Thoughts on Country Music

There are a few things that you can trust George Strait’s opinion on. It’s safe to say that one of those things is country music. With forty-five total albums and decades of touring, there’s a good chance the Texas native knows what he’s talking about.

You could easily draw a parallel between the current state of country radio and when Strait got his start. For those who wish that it would swing back to something a little less pop and a little more country, Strait has some comforting words. “You know, traditional country music is something that’s going to be around forever”. The King of Country music doesn’t mince words when it comes to the genre losing its roots, though. “The almighty dollar and the lust for world wide fame, slowly killed tradition, and for that someone should hang.”

Some may be surprised to hear that George Strait’s favorite genre of music isn’t actually country. He has said that swing is his favorite genre. He loves big band music and Frank Sinatra. Of Old Blue Eyes, he said “Sinatra, in my opinion, is possibly the best male singer of all time.”

We don’t have to worry about Strait going off and recording a big band record though. He was quoted as saying “I’m a country singer. I love all kinds of music, but country is where my loyalty lies. That’s just me and what I do, and I’m not going to change it.” There’s no real chance of the King of Country looking for greener grass somewhere else.

Strait on Determination

You don’t achieve George Strait’s level of success on just good looks and luck alone. Though, there are plenty of fans that would say King George has plenty of both. It takes talent, hard work, and a whole lot of determination.

Thinking back to the start of his career Strait said, “In the beginning, I wanted to be successful. I wanted to make and have hit records. And I wanted everything that went along with it.” He also said, “I want to reach the point where people hear my name and immediately think of real country music.” This just goes to show that Strait set high goals early in his career. He knew what he wanted and he went out to get it.

Strait may not write all of his songs, but he won’t just sing anything that is put in front of him. About this he said, “I just continue to look for different material, great material, as good as I can find, and try to go in there and do as good a job as I can do in making it a record. That’s all you can expect. That’s all that you can do.”

George Strait’s Love Songs

Even when Strait was doing interviews, he wasn’t too open about his private life. However, it is known that he has been married to the same woman for nearly fifty years. So, it is a safe assumption that the King knows a little something about love.

In a rare 2016 interview with “The Tennessean” Strait says “The whole world revolves around love…love is something that if you lose it, it’s going to hurt”.

He may not write all of his own songs, but he does do his best to choose songs that fit him. With that in mind, you can look at some of his romantic lyrics to see where his heart lies when it comes to the subject.

For instance, in the track “Need I Say More” Strait channels his love for Sinatra as he croons, “You’re the only one and only that my heart’s beating for. I love you. Need I say more?” Simple and to the point.

In “The Man in Love With You,” Strait highlights that you don’t have to be perfect for love to work. “I’m not the key, that opens every door. Don’t have the power to give you all you want and more. But when you’re needing something special you can hold on to, I’ll always be the man in love with you”.

George Strait’s Words Boiled Down

In the end, King George is more than just a country singer. He’s a man with passion. He knows what he likes and what he wants. He isn’t shy about putting his nose to the grindstone to get it, either. At the same time, he knows how much love means and how to put the feeling of love and loss into song. He’s King for a reason.
