Gwen Stefani Jokes About the Lesson She Needs to Learn from Dolly Parton

Gwen Stefani revealed the lesson that she hopes to learn from Dolly Parton.

What Gwen Stefani Had to Say

The Voice coach spoke with Hallmark’s Home & Family on December 4. The hosts surprised Stefani with two brand new festive guitars. “I’ve got to ask… Dolly Parton has to teach me how to play guitar with nails,” Stefani joked.

Dolly’s History With Fingernails

Believe it or not, Parton’s classic, “9 to 5,” was created by using her fingernails as an instrument.

“I did it on my fingernails,” she explained. “It sounds like a typewriter. I didn’t have my guitar because I didn’t want to get too scattered because we were trying to stay in the mood and they were doing lights and all of that. So I would just look around and get ideas watching whatever was going on the set. It was about women in the workplace. I would just kind of play my little fingers then go back to the hotel at night and write down the words.”

Shortly after Blake Shelton and Stefani got together, Parton spoke about the pair. “I think they look great as a couple, and they’ve both been through similar things,” Parton told Entertainment Tonight according to Taste of Country. “I met her [Stefani] when I was out there [Los Angeles] doing The Voice and she seems very sweet. They are all good people and I wish them all the best.”

Shelton told CMT via E! News that he and Stefani bonded over music. “Our common ground has been ’80s pop and rock music because, when it comes to old Tears for Fears records and even like Dolly Parton…whether it was country or if it was pop or rock if it was on the radio when we were young, we loved it,” he said.

Parton and Stefani both performed at this year’s Rockefeller Christmas Tree lighting on December 2.
