Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are one of country music’s most beloved couples. Today, they celebrate the 15th anniversary of their wedding. But they’ve actually known each other for years. In many ways, they started their careers together.

The two first met back in the late 1980s when they were unknown musicians looking to make a name for themselves in Nashville. Yearwood worked as a demo singer during her early career. And Brooks invited her to sing back up on his upcoming debut album. The two made a pact. He promised her if he ever became famous, he would let her open shows for him.

“[Songwriter] Kent Blazy introduced me to Ms. Yearwood, and he goes, ‘I knew you were going to like her,'” Brooks told Ellen DeGeneres. “When she left, he goes, ‘What did you think?’ I said, ‘Well, it’s strange. Because I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife. But I’ve been married for 13 months.'”

That meeting kicked off a decades-long friendship. The chemistry between Brooks and Yearwood was papable even though they weren’t romantically involved. When Yearwood recorded her debut album, Brooks returned the favor. The two performed the duet “Like We Never Had a Broken Heart,” the first of many across their career.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood Start Dating

At the time, Brooks was married to his first love Sandy. Meanwhile, Yearwood married Chris Latham, who she divorced in 1991, and later Robert Reynolds. But at the turn of the millennia, the two country music stars finally found themselves single. Brooks and Sandy divorced in 2000. Yearwood also divorced Reynolds a year prior.

Shortly after, they started dating.

“This was somebody I always enjoyed being around, and we had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did,” Brooks said. “If you like her and don’t know her, you’ll love her. If you love her and don’t know her, you’ll worship her. She’s the real deal.”

The Country Singers Get Married

In 2005, Brooks pulled a Johnny Cash and proposed to Yearwood in front of their adoring fans. He made it a moment Yearwood never would forget. Brooks pulled out a ring during a statue unveiling of himself at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California.

For the wedding, the two married in a small intimate ceremony on Dec. 10. Brooks’ three daughters from his previous marriage attended their father’s wedding.

“When we got married … we married the girls,” Yearwood said. “So the five of us always celebrate together.”

That year and every year since, Christmas came twice for the couple.

“It’s the perfect Christmas gift to each other,” Brooks said. “We could not be happier.”
