The Brothers Osborne rocked the country music world with their debut album in January 2016. That popular album was titled “Pawn Shop.” And, one of the most pivotal songs on it was “It Ain’t My Fault.”
“Pawn Shop” was an album that combined traditional country influences with modern ones, and was praised for doing so. It was also an album on which the Brothers Osborne – John and T.J. – co-wrote most of the songs.
Joining John Osborne and T.J. Osborne in writing the song “It Ain’t My Fault” was Lee Thomas Miller. Miller gave country fans a look behind the scenes of the song during a December 2020 interview with The Tennessean.
“(The Brothers Osborne) were writing professionally before they ever got their break. John was a studio musician. They were seasoned Nashville (players),” Miller said during the interview. “TJ, too. He had tons of relationships and everybody knew TJ Osborne was a monster. TJ is also a good guitar player, too. He lets John be John, but TJ is great. We just wrote the song on acoustic guitar, sitting in the room.
“You can imagine it was cool, but we were worried about words and melody and getting it all down. It was the first thing I had ever written with them. I’d forgotten that I had anything to bring in. We’re always careful to take credit for anything, because we write a lot of songs and you don’t want to overstep.”
Collaborator Unsure if ‘It Ain’t My Fault’ Made it on Brothers Osborne Debut Album
However, Miller wasn’t sure his collaboration with the Brothers Osborne was going to make it on the “Pawn Shop” album. In fact, he thought it hadn’t.
“The first time I heard the record, I didn’t know they had cut it. We wrote the song and they already had a couple singles out. I assumed we were working on the second album. I never even asked. It was four or five months after we wrote it, and I had never heard back from them,” Miller said.
While driving to work one day, Miller heard that the Brothers Osborne were releasing the album. This irritated and disappointed him, so he called his publisher to see what was going on.
“They just said the Brothers Osborne album is coming out. I thought it was already out. I wrote a song with them,” Miller recountied in the interview. “Did anyone ever follow up on that? Why do these songs just go into the abyss? What are we doing? I’m writing the best I can, and nobody ever cares.”
Then, Miller said he received some great news. His publisher told him the Brothers Osborne recorded “It Ain’t My Fault” for the “Pawn Shop” album.
