Kacey Musgraves is pulling out all the stops for her new album, Star-crossed.

Not only is Musgraves dropping a 15-track album on September 10th, but she’s also unveiling a 50-minute film to accompany the album. Now, that is how you release an album. Musgraves teased the film with a two-minute trailer yesterday. And we gotta say, we’re already hooked. Between the stark desert background, the colorful costumes, and the star-studded guest star line-up, the film promises to be a cinematic (and musical) masterpiece.

“We wanted it to feel cinematic and epic without compromising the heart and the emotion,” said Bardia Zeinali, director of the film. “To feel fantastical and heightened and tell her story through the lens of art and fashion.”

So, let’s talk more about these guest stars. When Kacey Musgraves says she’s making a film, she is indeed making an actual film. And she doesn’t cut corners when it comes to casting big Hollywood names to star alongside her. Eugene Levy of “Schitt’s Creek,” recent “RuPaul’s Drag Race” champ Symone, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star Victoria Pedretti, music artist Princess Nokia, and comedian Megan Stalter all appear in Star-crossed: The Film.

The film even includes an iconic location. Fans will immediately recognize the church featured in Kacey Musgraves’ film. It’s the same church featured in the movie Kill Bill. Quentin Tarantino fans will immediately remember the scene where Bill (David Carradine) sends a hit squad to kill the Bride/Beatrix’s (Uma Thurman) wedding party. However, Beatrix survives and ultimately comes back with a vengeance. Well, the church from the movie is the exact same church where Kacey Musgraves filmed her scenes for Star-crossed: The Film.

What Is Kacey Musgraves’s Movie All About?

After watching the trailer for Kacey Musgraves’s film, you’ll definitely pick up on themes of heartbreak and healing. There’s also a fun theme of breaking convention after years of trying to be perfect. Well, according to Musgraves, all of that is intentional. During a recent interview, Musgraves shared her inspiration behind the album and the film.

“I feel this record couldn’t be more literal in some ways,” said Musgraves. “But I also feel it’s got this theatrical kind of almost fantasy take on — I wanted there to be that, just kind of that classical story. That classical vibe, kind of woven through all these other modern sounds.”

Kacey Musgraves added that she loves when classic meets innovation.

“Which I always love when something classic or something traditional, something futuristic kind of meet,” she said. “I just, I’m always intrigued by that.”

This is also Musgraves’s first album since her divorce from her husband of two years, Ruston Kelly. Musgraves said that she’s happy to share this darker time in her life with her fans.

“I’m excited to share ‘Star-Crossed‘ just because people know me to be a songwriter that writes about what I’m going through,” said Musgraves. “And I think it would have been extremely awkward if I just acted this last chapter didn’t happen for me.”
