Kelly Clarkson spoke about how this years Billboard Music Awards will be different amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

What Kelly Clarkson Had to Say

The Kelly Clarkson Show host spoke with Stage Right Secrets and other media outlets prior to the big night. Clarkson said that she was thrilled to be back and that things will look “obviously” different from years past due to health and safety guidelines.

“I feel like every year I have a challenge, a personal challenge and this year it’s like everyone’s challenge,” she laughed. “We’re definitely going to navigate it in a new way but we’re gonna do it and it’s gonna be great.”

Clarkson revealed that all of the performances were lived but some were taped live at another location at an earlier date. “It will be in a more intimate setting,” she added, referring to the theater instead of an arena. “We’re trying to give everybody a little sense of normal… and provide the escapism we all really, desperately need.”

“It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, music is my outlet for generally my outlet for every emotion that I’m having. I’m lucky in that sense, I’m very fortunate for that because I have been writing a lot and recording a lot and I love singing.”

As for her opening number, a cover of Whitney Houston’s “Higher Love” alongside vocal group Pentatonix and percussionist Sheila E. “It’s going to probably be my favorite opening,” Clarkson revealed.

The 2020 BBMAs

The 2020 Billboard Music Awards will take place on Wednesday (October 14). Fans can watch the show live on NBC at 8 PM ET. The show was originally set to take place on April 29 in Las Vegas. It was pushed back due to the pandemic and will now take place at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.

Garth Brooks will be honored with the ICON Award. The show is stacked with performers, including an opening number from Clarkson. Her fellow The Voice coach, John Legend, will also be performing. This will mark his first public appearance since the loss of his and Chrissy Teigen’s pregnancy. Demi Lovato, Ty Dolla $ign, Bad Bunny, Brandy, and BTS will also be performing.
