Kelly Clarkson has had some incredible hits. Whether it’s her own or a song she’s featured in, Clarkson makes some great music. She sang one hit, Don’t You Wanna Stay, with Jason Aldean. But Clarkson admitted she didn’t really know Aldean before recording the song with him.

“We never really met before we did the duet and we met in the studio,” Clarkson said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I remember I was so excited, ’cause I loved the song so much, but when you’re meeting someone and you love their voice and you love their sound… you’re not sure if it’s gonna mesh, you know? It doesn’t always work out.”

Aldean echoed that sentiment.

“The way she was singing with me, too, how it all blended, you could tell it was something special. It’s the cool thing, cause you never know what two artists are gonna kinda have that chemistry,” he said.

Kelly Clarkson Brings in Aldean for the Newest Season of ‘The Voice’

Don’t You Wanna Stay may have come out over a decade ago, but the two have stayed in touch. Now, Kelly Clarkson has asked Aldean to help her out. It’s been revealed that she brought in Aldean for the newest season of The Voice, where he will help her coach the battle rounds.

The two are teaming up to try and take down Blake Shelton, whose team won last season. They joked around that they “don’t even like him.” Shelton and Clarkson have a hilarious relationship on the show, with both of them making playful jabs at each other over the course of the competition. Now, Aldean is getting in on the fun.

But it’s not all about the hijinks. The Voice hosts very serious singers, who are all competing for a shot at the record deal. While The Voice hasn’t created any superstars yet, it’s still a huge opportunity for aspiring vocalists to get their talents out there.

The battle rounds are an incredibly important part of that process, with two singers duetting after just meeting each other. Whoever performs best of the two (according to the judges) gets to move on to the next round.

“I thought it was cool because, literally, the Battles are two artists that have never sang together, that are coming together to do exactly what we did in the studio,” Clarkson said. And if Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean can teach the singers anything, it’s that that kind of duet can work.

Here’s the two of them performing the song at the 2010 CMA Awards:

You can catch the voice this fall on NBC. This season will premiere on Monday, September 21st, and feature Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, John Legend, and Ariana Grande as coaches.
