Listen to Dierks Bentley’s Bluegrass Cover of U2’s ‘Pride (In the Name of Love)’ From New Surprise EP, ‘Live From Telluride’

Dierks Bentley treated his fans to the surprise release of a new bluegrass EP, Live From Telluride, on July 13. The five-song offering was curated from Dierks’ performance at the 48th annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June 2021.

Of course, Dierks’ love of bluegrass music has been well-documented over the years. His 2010 album, Up on the Ridge, is a 12-song bluegrass-inspired collection. In fact, when Dierks moved to Nashville as a 19-year-old in 1994, one of his favorite hangouts in Music City was the bluegrass hub, Station Inn. Dierks has also become a staple performer at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

We’ll Do It Live, Dierks

Dierks’ new five-song EP features a bevy of musical guests. The War and Treaty (husband-and-wife duo Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount) jammed with Dierks on three tracks, including “Woman, Amen,” “Bad Angel,” and a cover of U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love).” You may recall Dierks teamed with The War and Treaty to cover “Pride” at the Station Inn during the 2021 ACM Awards in April. Dierks also included a version of the song on 2010’s Up on the Ridge, featuring The Punch Brothers and Del McCoury.

Legendary bluegrass picker Sam Bush joined Dierks and The War and Treaty on the new version of “Pride (In the Name of Love)” featured on Live From Telluride.

Sisters Rebecca Lovell and Megan Lovell of roots duo Larkin Poe gave Dierks an assist on “Travelin’ Light.” The song was featured on Dierks’ 2018 album, The Mountain, which combined Dierks love of bluegrass, country, and rock. In fact, Dierks penned 10 of the album’s 13 tracks after performing at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 2017.

The new EP also features Dierks covering Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” Longtime fans of Dierks know it’s not out of the ordinary for him to perform the rock cover during his concert sets. He performed a fiddle-and-steel version of the song on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in 2011.

“This really was a once in a lifetime show for me,” said Dierks Bentley. “Getting to play at my favorite festival, with some of my favorite musicians and performers, in one of my favorite places in the world felt like a dream. Luckily this dream was captured on tape. And I can go back and relive the way it felt that night whenever I want.”
