Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Tayla Recalls Grandmother Waiting in the Doorway for Her after Late Nights

Growing up close to your grandmother makes most of us very, very lucky. Singer Tayla Lynn can count herself on that list. Her grandmother is Loretta Lynn – the Coal’s Miner Daugther herself.

And, as much this famous grandmother loves her granddaughter, that didn’t keep Loretta Lynn from being tough of Tayla when the country music icon felt it was necessary. These days, Tayla is happy with the tough love her grandmother gave her.

Tayla, who is the daughter of Loretta’s son Ernest Ray, recently shared details of her relationship with her legendary grandmother. Those details came to light during an interview that PEOPLE released on July 8, 2021.

According to what Tayla had to say during that interview, Loretta Lynn once admonished her when Tayla showed up early one morning after a night out partying. She was staying with the famous singer when she went out and didn’t return until the early hours of the morning.

Needless to say, Loretta Lynn wasn’t happy with her granddaughter. According to what Tayla recalled, when she arrived home that morning her grandmother was waiting on her. Loretta had on a bathrobe and a look that immediately let Tayla know that she was in big trouble. To make matters worse, Tayla, who refers to Lynn as “Memaw,” forgot to do something important that night.

“She was not happy. If I was going to stay out, I’d always call. But this time, I didn’t. And Memaw made it quite obvious that she wasn’t going to play that game,” Tayla recalled.

Tayla also shared more details about how her famous grandmother felt about her actions that night. Unsurprisingly, Loretta Lynn made it clear that such behavior was not acceptable at her house. This lesson stuck with Tayla in the years that followed.

“It was a, ‘You might do that to your mama, but you are not going to do that here’ sort of thing,” Tayla shared. “She required respect and I learned that pretty quick.”

Even though those lessons stuck with Tayla it would take time before she decided to “straighten up and fly right” as they say. Luckily, she did so before addiction ended her life.

“There was a time when I didn’t want to wake up and see tomorrow. When you’re hiding from God, the last thing you want to do is see the sunrise,” Tayla shared.

Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Pays Tribute to the Coal Miner’s Daughter With Recordings of Famous Songs

Now that Tayla Lynn is older and wiser, she has turned a lot of her attention to her singing career. And, unsurprisingly, she has turned to her grandmother, Loretta Lynn for inspiration.

Recently, Tayla has released covers of a few of her grandmother’s songs. These included “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “You Ain’t Woman Enough.” These recordings appear on the new album, “Tayla Lynn Sings Loretta Lynn.”

“For a long time, I tried to do something different music-wise because I believed that’s what I was supposed to do. But when I let my gut start leading me and I started trusting my intuition, that’s when I knew that this was the record that I was supposed to make,” Tayla said. “It was literally the easiest, most joyful experience I’ve ever had.”
