Luke Bryan has certainly carved his path in the country music world. His debut single, “All My Friends Say” peaked in the number five spot on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Since then, Luke Bryan has produced 28 number one hit singles. One of those hit songs, “Drunk on You,” is arguably Bryan’s most popular song.

Bryan released “Drunk on You” as the third single from his album Tailgates & Tanlines in 2003. It was the first single that Luke Bryan did not co-write. Which may have led to some of his hesitancy about the tune. During a recent interview, Bryan revealed that he wasn’t even sure that he wanted to record the song when he first heard it.

“What’s happening with me is ‘Drunk on You,’ I wasn’t crazy about it,” he said. “The speakers go, boom, boom. I would say, and Jake Owen and I have talked about it, we couldn’t determine whether that was cheesy or not, and it was throwing us.”

We hear what you’re saying, Luke Bryan, but we have to disagree. Any country music fan can immediately connect “Drunk on You,” with summer nights spent two-stepping and hanging out with friends. Luckily, Bryan did decide to record the song and soared to the top of the charts soon after.

The Story Behind Luke Bryan’s ‘Drunk On You’

During the song, Luke Bryan sings, “Girl you make my speakers go boom boom. Dancin’ on the tailgate in the full moon. That kinda thing makes a man go mmm mmm. You’re lookin’ so good in what’s left of those blue jeans. Drip of honey on the money maker, it’s gotta be the best buzz I’m ever gonna find. Hey, I’m a little drunk on you and high on summertime.

So, what’s the story behind the song? Songwriters Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear penned the song about a man admiring the woman he loves. During an interview in 2012, Clawson talked about some of the responses he received from listeners after the song came out.

“Then the line ‘drip of honey on the money maker gotta be the best buzz I’m ever gonna find’ people from where I grew up just look at me and say the line to me, and they’ll be like, ‘What does that mean?’ My standard answer is, ‘Exactly what you think it does.’ The song is about a girl that this guy is just head over heels about.”

He added that his friends call him whenever they hear the song.

“Everybody that goes to a Luke show calls me and tells me, ‘Dude! ‘Drunk on You’ sounds so cool live and everybody is singing along!'” he said.
