One of the best things about social media is being able to see celebrities and musicians as people. Gone are the days of stars being on a pedestal, separated from the world by a shroud of mystery. Not only do we get a glimpse into their lives but we also get to see that they are also fans. Luke Combs recently gave a shout out to Ed Sheeran on his Instagram story. In the post, Combs bestows the mantle of GOAT on Sheeran. The fan moment came shortly after the surprise release of Sheeran’s latest track “Afterglow.”

The story post was an interesting look into Luke Combs’ life. Country music fans expect the artists they are fans of to listen to other country music. To some, it would come as a surprise that someone so steeped in classic country sound would be a fan of silky smooth pop singer-songwriters like Ed Sheeran. Things like this are a further reminder that, at the end of the day, artists are just people. They all have their own lives and interests that don’t necessarily match up with what they’re known for.

Luke Combs Loves Ed Sheeran’s “Afterglow”

It’s not a big surprise that Combs would find himself vibing with Sheeran’s music. Both have a hand in the writing of their music. They are both going through monumental positive changes in their lives. Sheeran became a father in September while Combs got married in August.

“Afterglow” is a sweet love song. The first verse seems to be an ode to a late morning spent with someone special. “Stop the clocks, it’s amazing/ You should see the way the light dances off your hair/ A million colors of hazel, golden, and red/ Saturday morning is fading/ The sun’s reflected by the coffee in your hand/ My eyes are caught in your gaze all over again.”

For someone in a new marriage or an old and happy one for that matter, those lines would hit hard. While it might seem odd that a country star like Luke Combs would call Ed Sheeran the greatest of all time, being a huge fan of lyrics that feel real is something we can all get behind.

Lyrics that touch your soul transcend genre. They say that all it takes to write a good song is a few chords and the truth, and that’s something that Sheeran has captured in “Afterglow”.
