Luke Combs Remembers His Wild First Night Meeting Eric Church: ‘I’m Not Scared of a Refill’

If country music star Eric Church invited you over to have dinner and drinks would you say no? Most people would definitely accept such an invitation. And, one person who got to experience that in person was Luke Combs.

The 31-year-old Combs shared details of that dinner – and the pretty funny aftermath – as part of the CMT series “Probably Shouldn’t Tell You This.”

“Everybody knows I’m a huge Eric Church fan. And the first time I ever got to hang with him – outside of saying ‘hello’ – I was actually writing for my second album and had rented a house,” Combs recalled. “We figured out we were going to be in the same place for like – and it wasn’t like, ‘Hey, I’m doing a show tonight, so I’ve got to leave.’ It was like they were going to be in the same town we were going to be in for a couple of days. He was like, ‘Hey. Come over. We’ll have dinner. Have a steak.’”

Naturally, Luke Combs accepted the invitation. On the night of the dinner, Combs and his wife arrived at Church’s location around 6:30 p.m. for dinner. Combs discovered that Church really knows how to grill a steak.

Luke Combs Said He Was Drinking Whiskey While Others at Dinner Hosted by Eric Church Were Drinking Wine

With dinner came drinks. According to Combs, he was drinking whiskey while the others were drinking wine.

“But, whiskey had just a tad more alcohol than wine does. So, I was on another plane of existence that evening than I think everybody else was. They made sure our glasses were full the whole night. There’s no doubt. Bro’s like, ‘Let me just keep you going on that.’ You know what I mean. Which is like, you’re not going to say, ‘no,’ at that point, you know. We’re there to have a good time. So, I’m not scared of a refill,” Luke Combs recalled.

Needless to say, by the time he left Eric Church, Combs was in quite the state.

“We had a driver to take us home. And I think we made it to the car at 4:30 a.m. I think is when it was. I had to stop in the middle of this really nice neighborhood. Eric Church got me so drunk that I threw up upon leaving his house,” Combs shared. “I didn’t throw up in the house or anything – but in the middle of the road. It was kind of like semi-collegish – being like 4:30, you know what I mean?”

Even though his night with Church ended up with Combs throwing up, he said he would do it again. “Chief, if I’m invited back over, me and the wife will come drink whiskey and wine and eat your steaks again. The guy can cook a steak,” he also said.
