Luke Combs spoke about what awards shows will look like in 2021. How will awards shows address the “Entertainer of the Year” category? Read his take.

What Luke Combs Had to Say

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, almost all touring has stopped. So how will that reflect the most coveted award? “I don’t know, I think that’s a really interesting question,” he began. “I can’t say that’s the first time I’ve thought about that because I do think you can still do Song of the Year and Single of the Year will remain pretty normal, but then when you get into Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Entertainer, it is different.”

Combs believes the definition of an entertainer is up for interpretation. “I think you just take the current criteria and you just kind of morph it and tweak it a little bit,” he explained. “I view Entertainer as whose done the most for the genre in the last year. And I think you can still take that same criteria and apply it to 2020, it’s just going to be different things.”

What could the new criteria be? The country crooner offered music releases, live streams, and media interviews. “I think you take streaming into account and sales, radio, it’s the same kind of thing,” he continued. “Just without the massive touring piece that is normally so associated with that particular award.”

Awards Shows in 2020

Award shows in 2020 took entirely different approaches from one another. Some shows went virtual while some ceased altogether. However, some shows still took place with health and safety rules and regulations. Most live shows faced extensive criticism after numerous artists tested positive while on the set of a handful of shows.

Combs performed at the Billboard Awards, CMT Music Awards, and CMA Awards this year. Combs was nominated for Entertainer of the Year at the CMAs. “It’s just cool to be nominated for the first time,” he said. “And nominated against some people that I really look up to and consider a heck of a lot more talented than I am.”
