Miranda Lambert Released Bluebird in late 2019

Miranda Lambert released Bluebird in December 2019. It represented her second single off the album Wildcard.

The song was big-time successful. She earned the CMA for video of the year, as well as nominations for single and song of the year. Lambert also picked up nominations at the Grammys for best country solo performance and best country song.

There’s always a story behind a song, a detail that inspires the words or lyrics. Co-writer Natalie Hemby said the song was based on a poem written by Luke Dick.

“And it was just talking about how you keep the bluebird in your heart,” Hemby said in an interview with Apple Music. “And he actually came up with that chorus, with most of it. He was like, ‘I don’t know if you guys like something like this.’

“And then of course Miranda and I were like, ‘Um, yes, and thank you, and please.’ And you know what? Whenever I get around them, those two are from Oklahoma-Texas area, and they have the same quick wit about them.”

Miranda Lambert, with Hemby and Dick, put the final touches on Bluebird three days before she married Brendan McLoughlin.

“It’s a song like I’ve never written before and I’m so proud to be a part of it,” Miranda Lambert said when she released Bluebird. “Since I wrote it, I’ve been seeing bluebirds everywhere… Now, seeing a bluebird sitting on a branch means so much more to me. I see a little piece of hope there, sitting with wings, and it’s a reminder.”

When the song hit No. 1 in summer, 2020, Lambert tweeted:

“I’m celebrating happiness and artistic freedom in a time when where we all feel a little caged.”
