Morgan Wallen Dishes on His Rebellious Side: ‘It’s Just Who I Am’

It’s not a surprise to learn Morgan Wallen is a rebel. However, this rebellious musician actually has a cause in making top country hits.

Morgan has accepted being labeled as the bad boy of country music. While rocking a mullet and cut-off sleeves reminiscent of the Billy Ray Cyrus days, he fits the role perfectly.

“He came into the office and someone said, ‘Morgan’s got a mullet,’ ” recalls his manager, Big Loud partner/CEO Seth England. England says he wasn’t exactly surprised. “We were already used to him being the rebel on our roster.”

However, he isn’t trying to be something he’s not. Wallen is authentic in his nature, which can be heard in his music.

Morgan Wallen: The Rebel and Preacher’s Kid

The Tennessee native believes some of his rebelliousness comes from being raised as a preacher’s kid as he felt he “was supposed to just be the leading example of Christianity.” He hated having to fit the mold of that role.

What he describes is a perfect example of what is an actual term, with the title of Preacher’s Kid Syndrome. A term for becoming rebellious if you’re a “preacher’s kid” due to the pressure of maintaining a certain image for the church.

“From a child, I was going to do the opposite. I can’t help it. It’s just who I am,” he says. “Like I’ve got something to prove on my own.”

At least Wallen is true to himself in his behavior and his music, which may be why he was named best new artist by the Country Music Association. His fans and listeners connect with his country-boy nature and his wild side.

However, the “bad boy” label had a negative impact on the musician’s career. Saturday Night Live disinvited him from his previously scheduled debut performance in October.

The Infamous SNL Controversy

The decision comes after footage leaks of the country artist not wearing a mask amidst a large group of people at a football game. The video evidence gets worse as you then see him at a crowded bar kissing different women, which definitely doesn’t follow COVID-19 protocols.

Due to the pandemic, the video didn’t sit well with many, including SNL‘s creator and producer Lorne Michaels. Wallen posted a video to Instagram following the incident.

“I respect the show’s decision because I know I put them in jeopardy, and I take ownership for this,” he said. “I’d like to apologize to SNL, to my fans, to my team for bringing me these opportunities, and I let them down. And on a more personal note, I think I have some growing up to do.”

By making the mature decision to take responsibility and offer a sincere apology, it seems the public has forgiven him, as well as Saturday Night Live. He was given his second opportunity to appear on the iconic live TV comedy show. Two months after the pull of his original invite, he finally took the stage.

The episode includes a sketch with Morgan Wallen and actor Jason Bateman. Morgan’s previous situation is the butt of the jokes, but he took it like a champ and performed two songs.

He finished the skit thanking the audience for “giving this poor Southern boy a second Yankee chance.”

The Release of Dangerous & His Chart-Topping Success

With songs entitled “Country A$$ Sh-t” and “Rednecks, Red Letters, Red Dirt,” his new 30-track album Dangerous: The Double Album expresses that honest energy of being a true rebel, and people are loving it.

He is the first artist in 13 years to achieve two songs appearing back-to-back on both the 2019 and 2020 Top Country Airplay’s yearly round-up with his songs “Whiskey Glasses” and “Chasin’ You.”

Morgan Wallen’s rebel yell is only beginning to roar.
