Morgan Wallen’s ‘More Than My Hometown’: Story Behind the Hit Song

Morgan Wallen surprises fans with his fourth consecutive Billboard number one song, “More Than My Hometown.”

Wallen released the single in the summer of 2020 as a much needed musical gift to fans stuck at home during quarantine. The song spent 36 weeks on the Hot Country Songs chart and quickly jumped to the number one spot. But what’s the story behind the song? Wallen spills about the true meaning behind the country hit.

At first listen, “More Than My Hometown” seems to be about a breakup. During the song, Wallen sings about a couple who quickly fall in love. However, they have different ideas about how they want to live their lives. He wants to stay in his hometown while his girlfriend wants to explore a new city. Despite their love for each other, they know that they have to part ways. Wallen sings, “Your big dream bags are all packed up and ready to go. But I just need you to know that I love you more than a California sunset. More than a beer when you ain’t twenty-one yet…I love you more than my hometown.”

However, during an interview, Wallen shares that the song is about more than moving on from a relationship. Wallen says that the true meaning behind the song is about staying true to yourself even when you love someone.

“It’s a song that represents, to me, a lot about not changing who you are for someone else,” says Wallen. “Even if you may really love that person, it’s important to stay true to who you are,” he says.

Wallen also says that talking about hometowns and the love someone has for where they come from seemed like a good metaphor for the song’s topic.

‘I thought that comparison to a hometown was a good analogy…It has a few different meanings but that was the most important one to me,” says Wallen.

“Additionally, Wallen says that he thinks it’s because of the message to stay true to yourself that so many people can relate to the song.

“And maybe that’s why it resonates with so many people,” says Wallen.
