On This Day: Alabama Releases #1 Single ‘There’s No Way’ in 1985

The band Alabama always finds a way. It’s been 36 years since the Southern rock band released their No. 1 hit song “There’s No Way.”

On this day in 1985, Alabama released the classic love song. Randy Owen’s vocals give life to this love story for the ages, with a melodic tempo set by the rest of the band. The tune’s perfect for either wedding anniversaries, a slide-show with an old flame, or setting a romantic occasion. It really is the love song that keeps on giving.

Depending on whether you are heartbroken or in love, the song could elicit tears or a smile or definitely both. Owen does have a way with words. The tune tells of a narrator so deeply in love that they couldn’t get through life without their significant other. The song captures the epic, cloud-nine feeling of being with someone and being happy.

Lyrics include: “There’s no way I could make it without you/ There’s no way that I’d even try/ If I had to survive without you in my life/ I know I wouldn’t last a day, oh baby, there’s no way.

The music video for the song is also peak 1980s, featuring the band in their prime. Never let it be said that Alabama didn’t go grand for their music. The video features Owens in a miniature romance movie with staples like kissing in the rain, steamy nights on the sofa, and women on horseback included. The cross-fade between scenes is just excellent ’80s nostalgia.

Alabama Lands Another No. 1

Released on their ninth album “40-Hour Work Week,” “There’s No Way” was another hit for the band. The tune proved to be their 16th No. 1 hit, shooting to the top of the country music charts. With the tune, Alabama accomplished quite a feat. They tied Sonny James for the record of consecutive No. 1 hits within so many singles.

The tune released in the middle of Alabama’s heyday. It’s fair to say that during those days, the band was on fire producing hit after hit. Between 1980 to 1993, the band produced a total of 40 No. 1 hits in question. The other hit from their ninth album was the title track “40 Hour Week (For a Livin’).”

But while it definitely has its merits and is iconic in its own right, it’s no where as steamy or romantic as “There’s No Way.”
