On this day, 28 years ago, country mega-star Garth Brooks released his 6th studio album, In Pieces. And nearly three decades later, Brooks fans are still celebrating his place in musical history.
The red and black checkered CD hit stores on August 30th, 1993. And like most of his albums, it was instantly famous. The disk brought home an ACM for album of the year and an AMA for favorite country album. And the songs are still some of his most well-known hits.
The CD kicked off with Ain’t Goin’ Down (’till the Sun Comes Up), which is by far one of his most iconic hits. “We wanted to write something that was a lot of fun, for no other reason than just that, fun,” Brooks said in a past interview. The album also included the chart-toppers Standing Outside the Fire, Callin’ Baton Rouge, and The Red Strokes.
“In Pieces was just time to smile. It was time to laugh, it was time to get loud. It’s definitely the most live album that we’ve ever cut,” Garth Brooks said, per The Boot. “I think the band went to a different level on this. They seemed to play more like a band that had been together for years than studio musicians that come together to play from time to time. So this one is all there for me. I like to listen to it loud.”
In Pieces ended up being certified platinum eight times. And last August, it earned its 9th Diamond Award from the RIAA. The RIAA hands out a Diamond Award each time an album reaches 10 million sales.
Trisha Yearwood on Her Successful Marriage With Garth Brooks
So with all his fame and constant tour dates, how does Garth Brooks maintain such a successful marriage? According to his wife and fellow star Trisha Yearwood’s interview with Taste of Country, it’s because they were friends before they were lovers.
“People ask me all the time about why our marriage is successful, and I always say because we were married to other people and we were friends for a long time, we were friends — we were buddies — and you’ll tell your friends stuff that you would never tell a guy you’re dating, right?”
The couple tied the knot in 2005 and have been a golden couple ever since. But the pair has to put work into their relationship—just like the rest of us.
Yearwood once told US Weekly that their marriage can be difficult because they’re both strong-willed and stubborn. “We’re both very independent people who run our own ships. And sometimes when two people are driving two big ships, it can be difficult,” she said.
Yearwood admitted that she’s had commitment trouble in the past. She was married twice before, and she noted that when things got tough, she was “really happy to just bail.” She said,” I was good at that.” However, she’s never wanted to take the easy way out with Garth Brooks. “In this situation, that’s not an option because this is the love of my life, you know? So you sit down, and you talk it through and, and that gets you better when you get to the other side.”
