On this day in 1990, country music legend George Strait hit No. 1 on the US Country charts with his song, “I’ve Come to Expect It from You.”

Strait is widely considered one of the most influential and popular recording artists of all time. That can be attributed to his cowboy look, and being one of the first country artists to bring the genre back to its roots and away from the pop country era in the 1980’s.

Written by Buddy Cannon and Dean Dillon, “I’ve Come to Expect It from You” was recorded by George Strait and released in October of 1990. It was the third and final single from his hit album Livin’ It Up. The song peaked at No. 1 on both the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart. In the United States, it stayed in the No. 1 spot for five weeks. In Canada, it hit No. 1 in January of 1991 and stayed there for one week.

How could you do what you’ve gone and done to me
I wouldn’t treat a dog the way you treated me
But that’s what I get
I’ve come to expect it from you
,” the chorus goes.
