Cash appeared in Season Nine, episode eight, “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer” or “The Mysterious Voyage of Our Homer.”
Over its 32 seasons on the air, “The Simpsons” have had tons of celebrity guest stars. But none have matched the baritone and ruggedness of Cash. Even the show’s creator agrees. In the commentary for the show’s Season Eight DVD compilation, Matt Groening dished on his love for Cash. He called the singer’s guest appearance “one of the greatest coups the show has ever had.”
Johnny Cash Appears As a Spiritual Guide
In the episode, Cash appears as what else but a spirit guide to everyone’s lovable buffoon Homer Simpson. Viewers may not have recognized Cash’s appearance. But his voice is instantly distinct. He plays what else but a coyote offering his wisdom after Homer’s latest mess up.
During the episode, Marge Simpson forbids her husband from attending a very public chili cookoff. In years past, he had embarrassed the family with his drunken antics. So, Homer decides to quit the sauce completely to attend the cookoff. But some actual sauce in the form of Merciless Peppers of Quetzlzacatenango burns Homer’s mouth.
He cools his mouth with beer, but his wife catches him and is upset. As a result of the peppers, Homer begins to hallucinate. That’s where Cash enters the picture as the “Space Coyote,” a spirit guide for Homer. He appears on top of a pyramid amid Homer’s hallucinations.
“Clarity is the path to inner peace,” Cash’s character said. He then attacks Homer before stopping and apologizing. “Sorry — I am a coyote. To make yourself complete, you must find your soulmate.”
The country singer soon sets Homer on his way to reconciliation with his wife. Believe it or not, this isn’t the craziest team-up between a country singer and a TV character.
