Luke Combs’ debut album, This One’s for You, is a 12-track record written solely by the country singer-songwriter in 2017. Combs describes the project as a “roller coaster ride” lyrically; in more straightforward terms, the record covers various meaningful themes for the singer’s premiere body of work.
Luke Combs’ success on the record would culminate when it peaked at No. 4 on the “Billboard 200” chart in June 2018.
Before Combs began his fearless foray into the country music world, the North Carolin native and son of a maintenance worker didn’t pick up a guitar until college. After he released This One’s For You, the singer and songwriter proved himself to be an astute student of the genre’s trends and traditional forefathers that came before him.
Before signing his record deal with Columbia, Luke Combs wrote and recorded This One’s for You. After signing, the label allowed Combs to release the project in its original form.
In an interview with The Boot, Combs discusses laying down the album and his love for songwriting, clearly evident in the record.
“I just love writing so much,” the then 27-year-old said. “I don’t think it was me being a stubborn fool, saying, I’m going to write this album.” I’ve been in town two years, but I’ve been writing for three or four years, and I felt like I had the songs to say what I wanted to say. So, I do take a lot of pride in the fact that I have written everything that I’ve released up to this point, and will be releasing on the new album. It just kind of fell into place, I guess.”
His songwriting proved to be a success with listeners: his first single, “Hurricane,” quickly climbed to No. 1 on the country charts. In “One Number Away,” another song about breakups, he gave fans emotional vulnerability while maintaining a rugged sound. The album was No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart for 50 weeks, a male artist’s record.
Luke Combs’ Goal For Album: ‘My Goal Is to Just Connect with People Through Music’
Throughout the interview, he was openly candid and unguarded about what he wanted for his album.
“I’m not trying to be some big-time celebrity; that’s not my goal. My goal is to just connect with people through music … My goal is to have people hear these songs and say, ‘There are these moments in my life that sometimes I feel like I need to say something, and maybe I can’t say it.’ If I can help these people deal with their emotions, whether they be the good, the bad or the ugly, then that, to me, is success.”
Luke Combs would meet his goal after the subsequent success accompanied the album’s release. On March 8, 2019, the album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of over two million units. Today, the album has sold 573,900 copies in the United States, with 2,694,000 units consumed in total.
