It feels like a Toby Keith kind of weekend, doesn’t it? So why not celebrate along with the country star by playing some tunes from Blue Moon.
After all, he released it a quarter century ago today. And Toby Keith, who loves to sing about cowboys, soldiers and horses, found his best success with a mushy love song.
But men everywhere thanked Keith for singing “Me Too.” It was a way to explain to their significant others why they loved them so much.
The Toby Keith social media accounts commemorated the day, Friday.
“Today marks 25 years since Toby released his Blue Moon album! Can you guess how many blue moons have occurred since then? (Hint: it’s the same number of songs found on the Bus Songs album!)”
Toby Keith and Blue Moon Look a Bit Platinum
The Blue Moon album was Keith’s third from the studio. He released it through the Nashville division of A&M records. The album featured three singles, all written by Toby Keith.
It was certified as platinum on Jan. 31, 2001, meaning it had sold a minimum of 1 million copies.
And “Me Too” was its most popular song. It was Keith’s first-ever romantic ballad that hit No. 1. It was his third overall. In the song, Keith played a guy who was raw and vulnerable, giving every man who can’t say “I Love You” a reason to play the song. It needs an audience of one.
In real life, Toby Keith does have an audience of one. He met future wife Tricia Lucas at an Oklahoma nightclub in 1981. He was 20. She was 19. The two were married in 1984. They have three children and four grandkids.
Lead Single Off Album Was Older Song Keith Wrote in 1987
The lead single off the the album was appropriately titled “Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You.” This was an older Keith song. He wrote it back in 1987 and released it then, but as a single on an independent label. He still was seven years removed from his first real album. When Keith released it again in February, 1996, as part of Blue Moon, the song peaked at No. 2 on the country charts.
The second song off the album was “A Woman’s Touch.” It got to No. 6 on the charts.
“Me Too” was the third single. This song was Keith as the awkward man who says “Me Too” when his sweetheart says “I love you.” It’s easier to say the two words in response than the three words at the start of a sentence.
It was a big change from Keith’s first No. 1 “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.” Plus, in the video, it was the first time Toby Keith sang without wearing a hat.
And we have answers to the Toby Keith Blue Moon post that prompted this story. His Bus Songs album, which was released in September, 2017, featured a dozen songs.
Did you know that there are two definitions of a blue moon. The first is a second full moon in the same calendar month. The last time that happened was in October. Another definition of a blue moon is the third of four full moons in a season. Our next one will be Aug. 22.
So now, on this Friday, you should have lots of Toby Keith songs in your head with a bit of moon trivia floating in there, too.
Outsider wishes you a happy weekend. And let it start with a Toby Keith song:
