Rascal Flatts bassist Jay DeMarcus broke the news of his father’s passing on Thursday and wrote a moving tribute to honor him

The musician took to social media to share the news and pay tribute to his father, Stanley Wayne DeMarcus. The senior Demarcus often went by the name “Wayno.”

“I lost my musical hero and father this morning,” he writes. “Known as ‘Wayno’ to most, he impacted everyone around him, and he was bigger tan life to me. I could never explain in just a few words how important the musical bond is that we share. It meant everything to me.”

Along with the moving words, DeMarcus includes several photos of his father throughout his years. The musician follows up that tweet with two more speaking of his father’s influence on his life and career.

“He taught me how to play, pushed me to be the best I could be,” he says. “I could not be more grateful for the time spent with him on the stage, and off.”

DeMarcus Remembers Late Father

In another tweet, he mourns the loss of his father, friend and musical mentor. He also says he is proud to be his son and that his father has “earned heaven.”

“I have a lifetime of memories that will not be my comfort, as I face this life now without him,” he tweets. “Rest in Peace my precious Dad. I was always proud to be your son, and I will miss you forever. Enjoy Heaven, you’ve earned it.”

Rascal Flatts previously announced they would be retiring at the end of this year, according to Taste of Country. DeMarcus has a reality show in the works among other projects he is working on.
