While Reba McEntire’s music career may be full of songs about heartbreak and lost loves, her approach to her relationships with her six children are anything but.
McEntire has one biological son, Shelby. Her five other children are “steps” although the country music icon has made it clear she is not a fan of the term.
In 1976, the Does He Love You singer married Charlie Battles a steer-wrestling champion and rancher. When he and Reba McEntire married, Battles had two teenage sons, Lance and Coty. Reba quickly developed a close relationship with the kiddos. Over the years, Coty followed his late father’s footsteps becoming a steer-wrestler and later settling down to focus on ranching.
A growing family for McEntire
In 1989, the grammy-winning star married her music manager, Narvel Blackstock. Through this union, McEntire added Blackstock’s three children: Shawna, Brandon, Chassidy to her family.
In 2010, Reba told “The Boot” that she views the children as her own flesh-and-blood.
“I don’t consider Brandon, Chassidy and Shawna stepchildren,” said the star. “I claim them all.”
Brandon went on to marry Kelly Clarkson. After eight years of marriage, the couple split in June 2020. The couple had two children: River Rose and Remington. Brandon has two other children, Savannah and Seth, from his first marriage.
Both Chassidy and Shawna have chosen a life outside of the spotlight, although both her dad and stepmother continue their popular careers in the music and television fields.
While her relationships with her stepchildren continued to be something she cherished, MCEntire was delighted when she and Blackstock welcomed their son Shelby in 1990.
“Shelby has brought us a lot of years of joy and laughter,” the doting mother said in her interview with The Boot. “He’s a funny guy. You don’t know from day to day if that will last or where he will be next week.”
Reba McEntire’s son finds his path
In 2012 Shelby found his passion in racing becoming a full-time race car driver. Shelby’s career has included races at and has raced at the US F2000 National Championship, the Pro Mazda Championship and the Indy Lights.
In 2020, Reba, always one of her son’s biggest fans proudly gave a shout-out to Shelby on her Intagram.
“A mama is only as happy as her kids are, Shelby,” wrote McEntire wrote. “‘Love getting back at Daytona International Speedway for the #roar.’”
The Fancy singer and Blackstock ended their marriage in 2015. Despite the split, McEntire has made it clear that she will always have a bond with his children.
