Reba McEntire’s getting into the holiday cheer a little early this year with the announcement of an upcoming Lifetime Christmas special. If you’re not quite ready to hang up the stockings and break out the tinsel, there’s no need to fret. The country legend stays plenty busy to keep bringing fans new content.
She’s spent the better part of the year reimagining some of her most classic pieces. While they’re all iconic in their own right, her newest rendition of “I’m a Survivor” will gift you with waves of nostalgia in the best way possible.
Reba McEntire Throws It Back
Die-hard Reba McEntire fans will recognize “I’m A Survivor” from her TV series aptly titled “Reba.” McEntire released the song back in 2001 as part of her Greatest Hits Volume III. She got help in the writing process from Shelby Kennedy and Philip White. She also involved herself in the production but received help from Tony Brown as well. The powerful anthem talks about overcoming adversity and finding power within.
A single mom who works two jobs / Who loves her kids and never stops / With gentle hands and the heart of a fighter / I’m a survivor
Although she released a shorter teaser version through Twitter, the whole music video can be watched here:
A dimly lit theater makes for the perfect set for the music video, adding layers of drama and solemnity. We see Reba make her way from the darkness to emerge front and center on a stage decorated with a beautiful piano. Lamps and bulbs cast their lights on the star, making her the focus of the video. We see her step into her power and take claim of the strong woman that she knows she is. Fans in the comments can’t hold back their emotions, fully admitting to shedding a tear or two.
The TikTok Trend
The “I’m A Survivor” music video follows a trend of the same name from TikTok over the summer. The “challenge” asked fans to create videos about their own journeys of becoming survivors while the song played in the background. Reba even joined in on the trend at the end of July.
In her video, Reba shows off her humble ranch as she completes a chore. She carries two heavy buckets presumably containing feed for her animals. As the song plays, she makes her way over to her two donkeys. Although she offers up a tasty treat, they don’t seem too interested. The video then wraps up as she sings out the last lyric “I’m a survivor” directly into the camera.
