A previously undiscovered and unreleased Johnny Cash song is coming to light and the radio with the help of Runaway June.

A number of artists have been chipping in since 2018 to release the album, “Forever Words.”

Runaway June and Johnny Cash

On April 9, the country music group consisting of Naomi Cooke, Jennifer Wayne, and Natalie Stovall released a cover of “My Song.” The band is being featured on a four-part reissue of Johnny Cash’s “Forever Words” album.

According to WIN 98.5, the project has been a slow and steady process. It included the gradual release of different Johnny Cash tunes since last October for a deluxe version of the album. However, now the final digital installment of the project was released on Friday.

Overall, the deluxe project came out in four waves with a total of 18 additional songs. The original “Forever Words” album actually came out in 2018. It was Cash’s poetry and lyrics being placed alongside matching music.

One of the songs on the final installment of the project is “My Song.” The song is a tribute to the continued impact of Cash on the music industry. Runaway June is known for appearing alongside Carrie Underwood during her Cry Pretty Tour 360 in 2019. The group has also been nominated for an Academy of Country Music Award for Best New Vocal Group.

Part of the song is, “In fairness to my music and my friends so I’ll go somewhere and sing my songs again.” This rendition of his music seems to be doing just that.

Cash and ‘Forever Words’

“Forever Words” has featured a massive amount of artists chipping in for the cause. Brad Paisley and Ronnie Dunn sing “Outta Site Tonite.” The Lumineers sing a song called “Pretty Pictures in My Mind.” Elvis Costello teamed up with The Imposters for “If You Love Me.” Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson also appear on a song called “Forever/ I Still Miss Someone.”

Ruston Kelly and Kacey Musgraves sing “To June This Morning.” The entire album is over two hours long. It has a wide variety of different genres of artists lending their voice and talent to the Johnny Cash project.

The album came out after a 2016 book with a list of poems called “Forever Words: The Unknown Poems.” The album also features a posthumously released track from Chris Cornell who has since passed away in 2017.

The daughter of Johnny Cash and Vivian Liberto Cash, Rosanne Cash, is also featured in the deluxe version of the album. She is a popular, Grammy-winning, Americana artist. Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash and her first husband, Carl Smith, also sings a song on the album called “June’s Showdown.”

The massive project is an interesting collaboration of different artists. It also brings Cash’s talent for writing music an all-new appreciation.
