Shania Twain would eventually become one of the best-selling artists of all time as well as an all-around country-pop powerhouse. However, even massive hits and a huge fanbase couldn’t spare her criticism and hate early in her career.

The Queen of Country Pop first released a self-titled debut album in 1993, which was a massive commercial failure. She then released “The Woman in Me” two years later, which would soon have widespread success.

Shania Twain Addresses Early Critcism

It went on to sell over 20 million copies and also earned her a Grammy Award. Despite all that success, Shania Twain was heavily criticized at the time. Instead of focusing on her music and her talent, people were instead narrowing in on her looks.

“I was criticized as an artist. I’m surprised I ever had any hits actually when I read them now. So for example, part of the quote from one of my reviews was: ‘She’s America’s best-paid lap dancer in Nashville. She’s hot, but can she sing? Is Shania just a flash in the pan? The most famous midriff in Nashville.’ So yeah, I ended up having hits anyway. Very satisfying,” Shania Twain said in an episode of her Apple Music radio show, “Home Now.”

A lot of the criticism came after the release of her fierce 1995 single, “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under.” Most of the criticism from the album came from that song, which is one of the songs Twain wrote.

“And what I just quoted were all quotes based on that first single from the ‘Woman In Me’ album. I wrote the song. And I was a little bit hurt, I guess, at the harsh critics, not focusing on the music. And the fans just wiped all of that hurt away and made the song one of my biggest hits. Thank you, fans,” Twain said.

Despite some of the cruel words, Twain continues to be one of the most influential voices in country-pop music history.

Shania Twain Mission For New Music

Despite early criticism, Twain continues to have a highly impactful career in the music world.

Since her 1995 album, Twain has released three others — “Come On Over,” “Up!” and “Now.”

The “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer recently revealed that new music may be on the way for her devoted and long-term fans that have been waiting patiently.

“When is my new album coming out? It’s so difficult to say that an album is finished and ready. I’m not procrastinating, but I do admit that COVID has created some timing issues because it’s been very difficult to get together with producers and musicians in the same room … I want to give you guys something that you can be really proud of as a Shania fan,” she explains. I want you to celebrate with me and I’m definitely on a mission to make the best album I’ve ever made. So please be patient. I want it to be worth waiting for,” Twain said on “Home Now Radio.”

As fans wait for that new album, Shania Twain has created quite the following on TikTok. At least fans have that to keep them satisfied with Twain content. She’s also going to resume her Las Vegas residency in December.
