The man of many hits, Garth Brooks, shot to the top of the leaderboard in 1991 with this classic hit. “Unanswered Prayers” is from his multi-platinum-selling album No Fences. Garth Brooks co-wrote the song with Pat Alger and Larry Bastian.
Furthermore, this hit song is Brooks’ fourth chart-topping single. “Unanswered Prayers” held the No. 1 spot for two weeks. Additionally, it played a party by keeping No Fences in the No. 1 album spot for several months. Brooks favorites the song so much, that he’s included it on many of his greatest hits albums, including The Hits, Limited Series, and Double Live.
“‘Unanswered Prayers’ was a big part of my heart that went out on that record,” Garth Brooks says. “In October of ’89, I saw my old high school flame. And I can say this now — at the time I couldn’t: For the first two years of my married life, I really thought the girl that was for me was still that girl that was in high school.”
“And now, man, just the realization that what you have is the best for you and the best you could ever do in your lifetime,” the singer continues. “It sure makes you sleep well at night.”
More About Garth Brooks’ 1991 Hit
“Unanswered Prayers” was inspired by true events, and the lyrics of the song seem to illustrate just that.
The lyrics talk about Garth Brooks’ personal experience right off the top, “Just the other night at a hometown football game / My wife and I ran into my old high school flame / And as I introduced them the past came back to me / And I couldn’t help but think of the way things used to be.”
The narrator of the song continues to sing about how he thought his high school sweetheart would be the one that he married and spent the rest of his life with. The man prayed for this to happen. However, the relationship didn’t last but he’s ok with that. He believes that God didn’t answer his original prayer to saddle him with another, “better” woman.
The end of the chorus says, “Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.”
