Thomas Rhett is ringing in the new year by reminiscing on the song that made his star rise in the country music world.

On the last day of 2020, Thomas Rhett tweeted a compilation video of all of the awards he had won thanks to “Die a Happy Man,” his awards speeches, snippets from the video, and the song being performed.

He added to his fans, “There is no better sound than y’all singing that back to me. Hoping for lots of that in 2021. Miss y’all – happy new year.”

Five Years Since Release of Hit Song “Die a Happy Man”

“Die a Happy Man” was co-written and recorded by Thomas Rhett. The single was released on September 28, 2015, from his second studio album, Tangled Up.

Both music critics and fans went crazy over the tune he had written about his relationship with wife, Lauren.

When the song first premiered and began taking off, Rhett explained to People how the song started as a love letter to his wife.

“I really did just wake up one day and was like, ‘I have yet to write a song about her.’ That’s just one of those cheesy things you do for your girlfriend when you’re 16, but I decided to do it when I was 25,” says Rhett.

Tangled Up was released in 2015, the single on the record “Die a Happy Man” spent two months atop the of the Hot Country charts starting in December 2015.

The Single That Changed Thomas Rhett’s Career

“Before we released ‘Die a Happy Man’ as a single, we were playing pretty consistently to 2,000 to 3,000 people a night,” said Rhett.“How do you go from 2,000 people to 16,000 people in a year? It’s really amazing what a hit song can do for you.”

“Die a Happy Man” skyrocketed Rhett’s career, but also allowed him to write more personal, heartfelt music, rather than the generic country songs he was playing before.

“If you can have a hit that really touches people, that’s the greatest feeling in the world,” Thomas said.

On the week of its release, the song debuted at No. 17 on the Hot Country Songs chart, No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 41 on the Country Airplay chart. The second week, it rose to No. 30 on the Country Airplay chart. It reached No. 1 on the Country Digital Songs chart in its third week, and topped the Hot Country Songs chart in its sixth week, continuing to top the Country Airplay chart in January 2016, staying at No. 1 on all three country charts simultaneously for multiple weeks.

The single is six-time Platinum certified.

Rhett has also countless awards from ACM, Billboard, CMA, CMT, BMI and other large music awards ceremonies.

The music video, starring his wife, was also a hit. During each ceremony’s acceptance speech, he made sure to give thank Lauren.
