Tim McGraw Admits That He and His Mother Aren’t Tech Savvy Ahead of Mother’s Day

Tim McGraw’s has more in common with his mother, Betty Trimble, than just family.

“She’s probably better than I am, but she’s not really tech savvy,” McGraw admits. “But she does do the emojis.”

McGraw revealed that when he sent her his song, “I Called Mama,” she sent back a bunch of crying face emojis. “[That] meant that she wasn’t gonna call because she was crying and she didn’t want to talk,” he adds.

McGraw explained that she does FaceTime with the family regularly but doesn’t talk on the phone, she would rather text. In-person, she’s a completely different communicator.

“But if you see her in person, she’ll talk your ear off all day. But she’s not a big phone talker,” he says.

All About Tim McGraw and His Mama

Trimble was pregnant with Tim McGraw while she was just a senior in high school. She ended up giving birth to him and couldn’t graduate at the time.

As for his childhood, McGraw shared that his mother “went through some terrible things early in my life.” Betty worked three jobs to make ends meet. She raised Tim McGraw and his siblings. Tim McGraw has two half-brothers, Mark McGraw and Matthew McGraw, and a half-sister, Cari Velardo.

“So, I have a lot of memories of all those things and I know how resilient my mom is and how tough she is and how strong of a woman she is, and how well she raised us under the circumstances – me and my two sisters that all grew up together – how she dealt with all of that thing,” McGraw concluded.

McGraw grew up and in 1989 attended one semester of Florida Community College in Jacksonville. He was planning on going to law school. However, he decided to make the move to Nashville to become an artist. His mother always wanted him to get a college degree but knew that it was his path.

“When I told her, she just said, ‘I’m surprised you hadn’t done it already,’” Tim McGraw said. “And that was her way of just telling me, go do it. So, you know… she’s a big deal to me.”

She has been supportive of his music career since the beginning. He has dedicated and written a few songs about his mother, including “I Called Mama.” Songwriter Lance Miller sent him a demo of the song and he instantly connected.

“We should all call Mama more often… or whoever those people in our lives are that keep us connected to what really matters,” Tim McGraw noted.

Following the lyric video’s 2020 premiere, the country crooner shared a screenshot of the text messages from his mother. She asked if her cameo in the video made her a movie star. “Lol. You’ve always been a movie star to me,” her son replied.
