Toby Keith Nails Acoustic Version of Billy Joe Shaver-Penned Tune ‘I Couldn’t Be Me Without You’

by Madison Miller

Toby Keith spent part of his time quarantined in Mexico. However, that never stopped him from continuing to sing for fans. Unfortunately, he had no guitar so he needed to find one quickly.

His solution was to go to a furniture store in Mexico and pick up an old acoustic guitar to use. From there he set up a camera and performed a variety of different songs.

One of which was the song “I Couldn’t Be Me Without You.” Toby Keith posted these performances on his YouTube channel in late April and called them “Furniture Guitar Sessions with Toby.”

The song he chose to sing is originally written by Billy Joe Shaver and then also recorded and made popular by Johnny Rodriguez.

His performance of the song came just a few months after Billy Joe Shaver passed away. He was one of the artists known for bringing country music’s outlaw movement into the spotlight in the 1970s.

He has written songs for widely influential artists like Willie Nelson, Bobbie Bare, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash.

Sadly, he passed away at the age of 81 in October 2020 after suffering from a stroke.

His song “I Couldn’t Be Me Without You” is all about telling someone that they are so important and influential that the the very fabric of their being wouldn’t be the same if they were to lose that person. Toby Keith and his cover seem to be speaking on the influence of Shaver on countless current country artists.

Some of the other songs he performed in this series are “Flowers On The Wall,” “Missing Me Some You,” “As Good As I Once Was,” “The Lord Knows I’m Drinking,” “Trailerhood,” and “Evangelina.”

Fans were excited to see Keith cover a variety of classic country songs.

Toby Keith and Diamond Resorts

While Toby Keith was performing on old furniture store guitars a couple of months ago, he is now in a new video series.

He has partnered with Diamond Resorts for the “Moments with Diamond” video series. Artists also featured include Travis Tritt, Cole Swindell, Lee Brice, Randy Houser, and Colt Ford.

According to Cision PR Newswire, the video series initially launched in 2019. Toby Keith spoke on his military efforts amongst other topics during his interview.

USO reported that since 2002 Keith has provided more than 250,000 troops with music through performances in 17 different countries. He was given the Spirit of the USO Award in 2014. He continues to be well known for his military-themed music and dedication to singing for the troops.

On Feb. 23 country-rapper Colt Ford talked about getting to tour alongside his musical idol Toby Keith.
