Amidst the House’s vote confirming his second impeachment, President Trump has reportedly given both Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs the nation’s highest award for the arts.

Sr. White House reporter for Bloomberg News, Jennifer Jacobs, is reporting that “several sources” from the White House have confirmed to her that “Trump is giving medals to Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs.” The medals, which she specifies are “national medal of the arts,” are the highest award given in the United States for entertainers and artists alike.

Bloomberg News clarifies that Trump presented the National Medal of the Arts to both at a closed press ceremony. The ceremony took place Wednesday as the House voted to impeach Trump a second time for inciting last week’s siege on the Capitol that claimed five lives.

Toby Keith, Ricky Skaggs Receive Highest Arts Honor

“Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue” singer Toby Keith performed at Trump’s 2017 presidential inauguration. He did note at the time, however, that he also performed at an event for former President Obama. Before that, Keith held a very-public feud with the Dixie Chicks over their criticism of then-U.S. President George W. Bush.

Skaggs, though, has been more direct in his support of President Trump and his actions during office. “I believe Donald Trump is the right person in the right place. And that it’s prophetic,” The Hill quotes of Skaggs during Trump’s term in office.

The bluegrass icon and “Country Boy” singer took the award privately alongside Toby Keith, reports cite. The National Medal of the Arts is for artists who “are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States,” cites the U.S. Government website.

The White House has yet to comment on either medal’s presentation.
