Trisha Yearwood is so proud of her husband. “You inspire us all,” Yearwood wrote when Garth Brooks became one of the Kennedy Center’s newest honorees.

Yearwood wrote on Twitter: “I can’t think of an artist more deserving of this honor than you. Garth Brooks, thank you for the gift of your music to a world who desperately needs it. You inspire us all to love one another, to be kinder, to be better. Congratulations on your (Kennedy Center Honors. I [love] you, more than ever!”

Kennedy Center Honors Top Artists Across All Genres

Each year, the Kennedy Center honors the country’s best in the performing arts for their lifetime achievements. Garth Brooks, 58, is country music’s all-time, top selling artist. Yet the Oklahoma native appeals to a broad musical base, pulling fans from both country and rock music.

In announcing Brooks as an honoree, the Kennedy Center wrote: “This year, we honor a singular singer-songwriter, a country boy with cross-over might, an award winner who never lost the heart of the people, the legendary Garth Brooks.”

The other honorees cross all genres. They include folk singer and activist Joan Baez; choreographer and actress Debbie Allen; violinist Midori and actor Dick Van Dyke.

With Garth Brooks Among Honorees, Will President Joe Biden Attend Ceremonies?

The awards ceremony is set for May. It’ll be interesting to see if President Elect Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden reconnect with the Kennedy Center.

The Kennedy Honors are awarded annually. It’s been a tradition since 1978. There’s usually a big show right before Christmas. The president and his wife usually attend. Bill Clinton watched as Garth Brooks performed to honor other artists. Brooks also attended a ceremony with Barack and Michelle Obama in the house.

Remember this ceremony in 2006 with Dolly Parton, when a young Carrie Underwood serenaded the queen of country music? George W. Bush was in the audience.

The Kennedy gala usually is in December. Until President Donald Trump took office, the first family stayed involved with the Kennedy Center honors. The first couple always attended the show and hosted a party for the honorees. But in 2017, Donald and Melania Trump declined to extend the presidential tradition and canceled the White House reception. The first couple also did not participate in 2018-19. The pandemic forced the postponement of the 2020 ceremonies.

Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, began hosting the awards. Other cabinet members began hosting receptions.

Organizers will spread out this year’s tributes over a week in May. A medallion ceremony is on the schedule.

Brooks Said JFK Was ‘Childhood Hero’ Of His

Regardless of who is in the audience, count Garth Brooks as a fan of everything about the Kennedy honors. No doubt, he’ll bring Trisha Yearwood to D.C. Maybe she’ll sing, too.

“President John F. Kennedy was a childhood hero of mine,” Brooks wrote. “And he has continued to be through every stage of my life. He knew that a nation is defined by its culture and a culture is defined by its arts.”

Garth Brooks also said: “I have watched many of my heroes sit in that booth during their ceremony. I have even had the joyous honor of singing for some of them on their special night. The hope is to have contributed to humanity like my heroes have, to inspire us to be the most we can be as individuals, global citizens, and a part of human history.

“But most of all, to simply laugh, cry, love, and dream through music…I have been blessed to do just that as a fan and as an artist.”
