Country music star Darius Rucker shines in a jaw-dropping performance covering Patsy Cline on the historic Grand Ole Opry stage. The world’s longest-running radio show celebrated its 5,000th Saturday night broadcast this past weekend featuring a stacked lineup. Performers included big names such as Garth Brooks, Dustin Lynch, Darius Rucker, and Trisha Yearwood just to name a few.

In 1925, WSM Radio began airing the show that would become the Grand Ole Opry. Through the years, the show expanded to television and eventually digital streaming platforms. The Opry produced original shows for 5,000 Saturday nights surviving the Great Depression, World War II, two Nashville floods, and now, a global pandemic.

The celebratory Saturday night broadcast included a once-in-a-lifetime performance by Rucker amongst others. Rucker opened his portion dressed to the nines in an impressive black suit and matching cowboy hat before treating the audience to an incredible cover of Patsy Cline’s classic “Walkin’ After Midnight” originally recorded in 1957.

Watch the video below featuring the impressive cover with Rucker’s performance starting at the 1:30 mark.

“Walkin’ After Midnight” was written by Alan Block and Donn Hecht and is featured on Patsy’s 1957 self-titled debut studio album.

Although Patsy wasn’t thrilled about originally recording the single, she eventually agreed after some coaxing from her label.

Darius Rucker Name Drops Patsy Cline in Single “Alright”

Darius isn’t shy when it comes to his love for Patsy Cline. In fact, in the third single from his highly successful country album Learn to Live titled “Alright,” Rucker drops Cline’s name in the lyrics. The song observes the idea of being content with what you have, and not what you don’t. The lyrics mentioning Patsy Cline are, “I’ve got a stereo and the best of Patsy Cline Ain’t got no caviar, no Dom Perignon But as far as I can see, I’ve got everything I want.”

“This is how we really feel. I love the simplicity of the whole song. And, of course, any time you get to mention Patsy Cline in a song, I think that’s awesome,” said Rucker. “This is about just not needing all those big and crazy things. I’ve done all that stuff. I’m 42, I like a glass of champagne but I’d rather have a beer if I have a choice. It’s realizing the things that make me happy. It took me a long time to get here. I thank my wife for the bottom of my heart for still being here.”
