To celebrate the anniversary of his hit song “Amarillo by Morning,” country music legend George Strait launched the Amarillo by Morning TikTok Challenge.

The TikTok Challenge

Contestants had to record their own TikTok video using the “Amarillo by Morning” soundtrack. Then they had to post the video and tag Strait, and then follow him on TikTok. The deadline for submissions was Jan. 31.

Strait got some truly amazing entries, from a trio of cute kids clutching guitars to a man standing beneath the Amarillo city limit sign with a fiddle to a pair of doctors in scrubs and masks.

Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser wrote “Amarillo by Morning.” Strait’s 1983 cover of the song hit No. 4 on the Billboard Country chart the year he released it. Strait also included the song on his album Strait from the Heart.

George Strait Hopeful 2021 Will Bring Some Normalcy

Strait has been playing it safe during the coronavirus pandemic, he recently told Cowboys and Indians magazine. And that means he hasn’t ventured into the recording studio to lay down new tracks.

“Nothing [music-wise] to report right now, unfortunately,” Strait said. “Like everyone else, I’ve been trying to be careful. My guys and I haven’t been together since last March. We’re all hopeful 2021 will bring back some normalcy and we can make more music.”

“I’ve got a few things I want to record [this] year,” he added. “Not enough for a record, but I’m working on that. I really don’t want to go into the studio and have to wear a mask. Not a good vibe for a record.”

But Strait has been pretty active on social media during the pandemic, posting throwback photos and reminiscing about live performances.

And now, with his TikTok challenge, he’s getting to see a sampling of his huge fan base, which is likely similarly cooped up and looking for something to do during the pandemic. Strait can’t help but be impressed by their moxie and creativity.
