Randy Travis is an icon for almost everyone who enjoys country music. Heck, you don’t even need to be an avid country fan to love Randy—he’s that good. So it’s no surprise that a platinum-certified artist like Jon Pardi would idolize the 62-year-old legend. And recently, Pardi got a surprise visit from Randy. We have a video of their touching introduction right here.

Jon Pardi grew up listening to Randy Travis with his grandmother. And unsurprisingly, Travis has been a major influence on Pardi’s career. In fact, Pardi still has his grandma’s Randy Travis cassette tapes, and they’re one of his biggest treasures. So in a recent video, Jon decided to honor the singer in a CMT Artist of the Year segment.

“Being a part of country music now, with all our new artists, and then you got our legends like Randy,” he says in the video. “Like, we’re all a part of this big community. And my name is in that hat with Randy. And it’s a big deal.”

But what Pardi didn’t know was that Travis was on his way to downtown Nashville to surprise Pardi as he recorded a cover of Forever and Ever Amen and On the Other Hand.

As Jon Pardi was finishing up a line of lyrics, Randy Travis burst through the doors. And it took Pardi a good few seconds to process what was happening. Once Pardi realized that his idol was really breathing the same air as him, tears began welling in his eyes.

“Well hey, Randy,” he choked. “Well, this is a surprise!”

Pardi went on to sing a rendition of He Walked on Water for Randy Travis. But he couldn’t get through the song because he was too emotional. But that’s ok. We’d feel the same way. And we’re sure the moment was just as touching for Travis as it was for Pardi.

Randy Travis to Receive CMT ‘Artist of a Lifetime’ Award

Tonight, Randy Travis will go down in country music history when CMT honors him with the Artist of a Lifetime award.

Upon learning that he’d be handed the coveted award, Travis said, “To think you receive a Lifetime Achievement award for sharing your heart with the world through music is really beyond words of gratitude.”

On September 30th, Leslie Fram, Senior Vice President of Music & Talent at CMT, made the announcement about Travis’s upcoming commemoration. And she told fans why CMT believes that Randy Travis is an industry legend.

“It is a privilege to announce Randy Travis as the recipient of this year’s CMT Artist of a Lifetime award,” she said. “His historic career encompassing multiple genres illuminates his extraordinary talent, determination, and lasting influence on country music and beyond.”
