WATCH: Shania Twain Explains How ‘Any Man of Mine’ Became First Single for ‘The Woman in Me’

Shania Twain is giving insight into the story behind her hit single, “Any Man of Mine”, the female-empowerment anthem of the 90s.

Speaking to CMT, Twain reminisced about creating “Any Man of Mine” and the risk she took putting it out.

“I wanted “Any Man of Mine” to be the first single, and no one was confident enough to do that,” she said.

Barely 30 years old at the time of the release, Shania Twain recalls the pushback she got for wanting to release the single.

“They all thought it was safer to put out “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under,” which I loved as well. I just thought well, it’d get its chance.”

Off her album, The Woman in Me, “Any Man of Mine” was her second No. 1 single. The song was nominated for “Best Country Song” and “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” at the 1996 Grammy Awards.

“I think any man of mine is the kick the door down way to go. I’m glad that ‘Any Man of Mine’ did get its opportunity. It was my first number one,” she said.

Shania Twain’s Message of Girl Power

Twain also describes how the track connected her with her fans. The playful yet confident tone of “Any Man of Mine” was a message of inspiration to her female fans. This deeper level of connection could be a reason why the song is so successful. The message of female empowerment gave fans reason to celebrate the song.

“It was really exciting. There was a lot of adrenaline when it was single after single, to know that fans were catching on to this and that they were relating to what I was saying and to the spirit of the music, the playful confidence voice of a woman at that time and even now, it is something to celebrate.”
