Country music star Tim McGraw on Sunday tweeted a video that explains how he got a record deal in the first place.

“The journey with @bigmachine is one I’ll always be grateful for,” McGraw tweeted. “Happy to be working with this incredible team again!! Hope you enjoy the new collection. #McGrawMachineHits.”

McGraw Relates How He Got a Record Deal

In the clip, McGraw talks about the role of the Borchetta family, and Mike Borchetta in particular, in saving his music career.

“The Borchettas have been a part of my career from the very beginning,” McGraw began. “I mean, my record deal with Curb Records wouldn’t have happened without Mike Borchetta, Scott’s dad.”

At the time, Mike Borchetta was working for Curb Records in Nashville.

“I mean, I had tried to get a meeting with him forever,” McGraw continued. “And finally during Fan Fair one year, I just walked into his office. He tried to kick me out, but I made him listen to my CD. And at the end of listening to three songs that I had, he said, ‘I think I’m gonna get you a record deal.’”

And the rest was country music history.

The Move to Big Machine

Later on, after a legal battle with Curb, McGraw signed with Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Records in 2012.

“It’s time for Tim to take over,” Borchetta said in a press conference at the time. “This is about music. It’s music business. That means music comes first. And that’s what we’re gonna do.”

McGraw said he’s grateful for everything the Borchettas have done for him and his career. He’s still with Big Machine Records, and he hopes that continues well into the future.

“It’s been a great ride with the Borchettas,” McGraw added. “I mean, they’re a big part of my success and my musical family. And I hope it happens for a long time.”
