In an astonishing vocal resemblance to his father, Willie Nelson, Lukas Nelson’s touching 2013 performance of Always on My Mind is a worthy cover. The now 32-year-old Lukas Nelson often posts covers of his father’s songs on social media.
The comments on the video are quick to point out the similarities between Lukas Nelson and Willie Nelson’s vocals.
“Well, we’ll be able to go hear Willie sing live for another 50 years or so,” said one viewer.
Another viewer was quick to point out not only the similarities but Lukas Nelson’s own unique style. “Wow…Lukas So much like your Dad. And yet, So grounded in your own style. Congratulations, man, and I’m definitely a fan!!!!”
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real
While Lukas Nelson’s vocals are strikingly reminiscent of Willie Nelson’s, it’s clear that he’s paved his own way. Lukas Nelson has his own band, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. The California-based country-rock group has released 6 studio albums and 4 eps. Neil Young has used the band as a backing band since 2015. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real has recorded two studio albums with young, The Monsanto Years (2015), and The Visitor (2017).
The band also worked on and appeared in the Oscar-winning film, A Star is Born (2018). Nelson worked alongside Lady Gaga as a co-writer and producer of the soundtrack. Lukas Nelson won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Music and a Grammy award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the film.
While Lukas Nelson does a lot of work independent of his father, that doesn’t mean they don’t perform together. In fact, Willie Nelson frequently performs with his kids and puts their vocals on albums. In a recent example, Lukas Nelson, his brother Micah, and Willie nelson performed on a 2020 episode of Late Night With Stephen Colbert. The three covered “Hello Walls.” Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real has also opened for Willie Nelson on multiple occasions.
Willie Nelson Today
Luckily, Willie Nelson appears to be doing well. According to his wife, Annie, the 87-year-old icon recently got the COVID-19 vaccine and jokingly “bragged” about not feeling sore. She recently told The Rolling Stone how lucky they are, and in true Willie Nelson fashion, they were careful about not “cutting the line.” “We made sure that (he) wasn’t cutting anybody.” She said, “In fact, the healthcare workers were kind of angry that we had waited so long because he is 87 years old and has COPD.”
And during quarantine, Willie Nelson has stayed busy. He’s currently working on an album with his sons, Lukas and Micah, and multiple other projects. The country legend has also said he hopes to get back on tour in the fall if the pandemic situation is safer. But no matter what the future holds in terms of live music, it’s safe to say fans can expect more from the Nelsons soon.
