Connery’s family confirmed that the actor passed away overnight in his sleep at the age of 90. However, the cause of death has not been reported.
The Scottish actor was the first in a long line of leading men to take on the famous British spy character of Bond, James Bond. Connery starred in seven films of the long-running franchise.
Now the most recent actor to take over the famous 007 role has spoken out about Connery’s death. Since 2005, Craig has played the iconic role of James Bond. In an Instagram post, the current 007 spoke about not just Connery’s role as 007, but his overall impact on Hollywood.
“It is with such sadness that I heard of the passing of one of the true greats of cinema. Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond and so much more,” wrote Craig on Instagram.
“He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster. He will continue to influence actors and film-makers alike for years to come. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Wherever he is, I hope there is a golf course,” Craig concluded.
Sean Connery’s Storied Acting Career
Craig’s post comes amid a wave of condolences from fans and fellow actors across the globe. In the 1960s, Connery’s success on the silver screen turned him into an international star.
The Scot took on the lead role of the James Bond films as the first to portray the character in 1962’s “Dr. No.” Connery went on to star in other hugely popular films including “Murder on the Orient Express,” “The Untouchables,” and “The Rock.”
Following “Dr. No,” the actor reprised the iconic role in six more James Bond films. They included the classics “From Russia with Love,” “Goldfinger,” “Thunderball,” “You Only Live Twice,” “Diamonds are Forever,” and “Never Say Never Again.”
Connery earned numerous acting awards in his storied career. He earned an Oscar at the Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, and two British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) awards.
The actor’s death follows another delay in recent weeks of the newest upcoming Bond film “No Time to Die.” After starring in four previous 007 films, supposedly “No Time to Die” will be Craig’s last run as James Bond. Originally “No Time to Die” was scheduled to release in April 2020, but was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new film will release sometime in 2021, however, an exact date is unknown.
