Dog the Bounty Hunter has called off the hunt for 23-year-old fugitive Brian Laundrie after authorities discovered human remains near some of Laundrie’s possessions.

Dog, whose real name is Duane Chapman, has been searching for Laundrie for over a month now. But he told The Sun that he’d be ending the search now that these remains have entered the picture.

“We are praying for Gabby’s family as yet another day ends with seemingly more questions than answers. Though it does seem the search for Brian is indeed over,” Dog the Bounty Hunter told The Sun.

Authorities wanted to question Laundrie about the death of his 22-year-old girlfriend, Gabby Petito. Police discovered her body in Bridger-Teton National Forest on Sept. 19. The Grand Teton County coroner recently confirmed that she died three to four weeks before her body was found by manual strangulation.

Laundrie went missing on Sept. 14, but on Oct. 20, the authorities discovered a backpack and “other items” in the Carlton Reserve. That’s primarily where police have searched for the fugitive since he told his parents Chris and Roberta Laundrie that he’d be going for a hike there when he disappeared.

“There will be time to ask questions such as what was the extent of the Laundries’ involvement in aiding Brian. But now we wait,” Dog the Bounty Hunter told The Sun.

The Laundries confirmed that the items found in the Carlton Reserve belonged to their son. But now, we must wait while the forensic results come in from the partial human remains discovered near the belongings. The family’s lawyer, Steven Bertolino, told CNN the family is “heartbroken” over the “strong” possibility that the remains are Brian’s.

“The probability is strong that it is Brian’s remains. But we are going to wait for the forensic results to come in to verify that,” Bertolino said.

Dog the Bounty Hunter’s Daughter Sends Message to Family of Gabby Petito

On Wednesday, Oct. 20, Dog the Bounty Hunter’s daughter Lyssa Chapman sent a message to the Petito family. She sent it out shortly after the police confirmed they’d found human remains near Brian Laundrie’s belongings.

Chapman tagged Petito’s father, Joseph Petito, in a tweet that read, “Sending you strength and love today.” At the time, Dog the Bounty Hunter had not yet declared the ended search for Brian Laundrie. But with the high possibility that the remains belong to him, Chapman knows that the Petito family must be feeling frustrated and heartbroken.

Many people suspect that Laundrie is specifically linked to Petito’s murder, but as of right now there’s no evidence to confirm this. The couple traveled together across the country, hitting up national parks in the American West. But her family didn’t hear from her near the end of August, right when the coroner suspects she was killed. If Laundrie is dead, her family may never know why he or anyone else killed her.
