Dollar Tree no longer requires customers to wear masks unless the state mandates it. The chain reversed its policy in a statement released on Thursday.
Previously, Dollar Tree required masks at all 15,000-plus U.S. stores. However, the chain now simply encourages masks, but does not require them.
The retail company shared a statement on its website regarding the decision. “In accordance with guidelines from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we are requiring all Associates and vendors to wear face coverings when inside our stores. We also request that our customers wear face coverings, and require face coverings where required by state or local ordinance,” the statement reads.
The company’s decision comes only days after major chains like Wal-Mart instituted mandatory mask policies. Other stores like Kroger, Target, CVS, and Kohl’s also implemented such measures.
On Wednesday, the National Retail Federation (NRF) issued a statement urging retail stores to implement mandatory mask policies. “The health and safety of associates and customers is retailers’ number one priority and wearing a face covering or mask is scientifically proven to reduce the spread of COVID-19. NRF applauds the leadership of companies like Walmart, Starbucks, Best Buy, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Apple, Qurate Retail Group, Costco, and others that have implemented nationwide mask mandates,” the NRF said.
Why Dollar Tree Reversed Its Policy…
Dollar Tree’s decision to reverse its policy comes after multiple reports of customers attacking employees. The issues arose when employees attempted to enforce mask-related rules such as requesting that customers put a mask on or refusing to let them enter the store.
In May, a customer shot and killed a security guard at a Family Dollar Store in Michigan. The guard refused a customer entry because her daughter wasn’t wearing a face-covering. A number of similar incidents happened all over the country at retail stores. Learn more here.
