Pizza is at the center of several years-long debates. In the early days, it was the question of deep dish or New York-style pies. More recently, the world has argued whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza. However, the internet has provided something that both sides of those debates can probably agree on. Watermelon pizza probably shouldn’t exist.
Here at Outsider, we’re no strangers to odd food items. In fact, we’ve tried a couple of the web’s favorite food trends. Pickle beer? Delicious. Corn ribs? Not bad at all. This, though, we’re not entirely sure about. Make no mistake, we’re not just talking about adding watermelon to a traditional pie. Instead, some mad food scientist decided to use fried watermelon as the pizza’s crust.
The whole thing started with Oliver Paterson. He’s a social media foodie and what our pals across the pond would call a mad lad. He shared a video of himself making and trying his, “famous watermelon pizza,” back in June on TikTok. Then, the Australian branch of Domino’s Pizza tried it out. See their video below.
@dominosau Y’all keep asking us for a low carb option 😏🍕Nah fr when we saw @elburritomonster make a watermelon pizza, we HAD to give it a go.

In the original video, Paterson said about the fruit creation, “I can’t actually recommend this enough.” However, the pizza chain had a different opinion. After making and trying the watermelon pizza, the Domino’s employee doesn’t look pleased. The video concludes by saying that the dish must be an acquired taste.
Make Your Own Watermelon Pizza
For those who are brave enough to try it, watermelon pizza seems simple enough to make.
The recipe starts by slicing watermelon into discs. Then, you toss one of those discs into a skillet and toast it on both sides. At this point, I can almost feel every one of my fellow southerners checking out. For those who remain, it only gets stranger.
After you’ve toasted your slice of watermelon, you’re ready to start building the pizza. Choose your favorite barbecue sauce and slather it on the warm watermelon disc. This will serve as the pizza sauce. Then, add shredded low-moisture mozzarella cheese and chorizo. On the other hand, the Domino’s crew tops their watermelon pizza with pepperoni. Finally, pop the abomination pizza in the oven until the cheese is melted.
After you pull the cheesy barbecue watermelon disc out of the oven, slice it like you would a small pizza. Now you’re ready to brave the culinary concoction.
There are some pros and cons to this recipe. On the bright side, it’s healthy and relatively cheap to make. If you’re looking for a low-carb option this is one idea. However, it’s a pizza that uses a slice of watermelon as a crust. All of the cons are right there in the name.
Pineapple on pizza doesn’t sound quite so bad now, does it?
