Drew Barrymore is confirming a long-rumored bizarre story about her grandfather. The 45-year-old actress says that her grandfather, John Barrymore’s body, was stolen from the morgue.
During an appearance on “Hot Ones,” the “Never Been Kissed” star dished on the story. She says her grandfather’s actor friends, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, and art critic Sadakichi Hartmann took his body so they could have “one last party.” Barrymore’s Hollywood icon grandfather passed in 1942.
“Not only yes [it’s true], but there have been cinematic interpretations of that,” she said. Barrymore then cited 1981 Blake Edwards film, “S.O.B.”, as well as hit 1989 comedy, “Weekend at Bernie’s.”
“I’ve heard things about Weekend at Bernie’s. I can’t know ever if that’s even true,” she said. “But yes, they did [steal his body].”
She says that Flynn, Fields, and Hartmann took his body and propped it up at a poker table.
Drew Barrymore Wants Her Friends to Pull the Same Stunt
Barrymore later noted that she hopes her friends give her the same treatment after she passes. “I hope my friends do the same for me,” she said.
She continued by adding: “That is the kind of spirit I can get behind. Just prop the old bag up. Let’s have a few last rounds. I think death comes with so much morose sadness, and I understand that, but if it’s OK, just for me, if everybody could be really happy and celebratory and have a party, that would be my preference.”
Currently, Barrymore is getting ready for her new daytime talk show, “The Drew Barrymore Show.” It premieres on Sept. 14 on CBS.
The actress shared her excitement about the upcoming show in a recent press release. “I’m really looking forward to this digital world we are about to bring you into,” she said. “I have been on this show journey for a year. We started in 2019, it is now 2020, a very different year.”
