Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently took the title of the world’s richest person from the hands of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. Lately, he’s been making headlines in coordination with his impressive feat, his net worth now soaring beyond $300 billion. However, the latest breaking story features the multibillionaire making some seriously costly deals in connection with the United Nations.
Following the United Nations’ World Food Programme director David Beasley’s statement last week, Elon Musk appears willing to hand over $6 billion to the international agency. However, the caveat requires the UN prove how they may solve world hunger.
According to People magazine, Musk’s statement came after Beasley spoke with CNN. In discussion with the news outlet, the director stated a one-time donation of $6 billion from the world’s richest billionaires could solve the issue. He stated the sum could “help 42 million people that are literally going to die if we don’t reach them.”
The huge number of at-risk individuals results from the culmination of the world’s three C’s: conflict, climate change, and COVID-19.
Beasley’s statement was incendiary as he referenced namely Bezos and Musk. He heightened the conflict stating, “What if it was your daughter starving to death? What if it was your family starving to death?” He begged the multibillionaires to “wake up, smell the coffee, and help.”
Seemingly, Musk has no issue donating the whole $6 billion imself. However, as stated above, the UN would need to prove exactly how the sum would solve world hunger.
Specifically, the Tesla CEO wrote on Twitter, “If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it.”
Unfortunately, it appears the deal is at a standstill. However, Beasley did insist on an in-person meet to go over UN plans regarding world hunger and other related issues.
UN Representative Invites Elon Musk to Open Discussion
Beasley’s statement directed at Musk and Bezos led to a reported misunderstanding in breaking headlines. The UN director claimed the issue arose in connection between the total $6 billion and world hunger. He clarified what he meant writing, “Headline not accurate. $6B will not solve world hunger, but it will prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation.” He then referenced the “perfect storm” of Earth’s three C’s.
However, from here, the UN representative was not finished. In order to better communicate his point with Elon Musk, he added to his statement.
“With your help,” Beasley began, “we can bring hope, build stability and change the future.” In short, the director invited Musk, “Let’s talk…I can be on the next flight to you. Throw me out if you don’t like what you hear!”
From there, Elon Musk insisted Beasley and the UN reveal to the public the program’s current and proposed spending. He cited that it’s important the public “see where the money goes.”
Again, Beasley inquired of the SpaceX founder, “Instead of Tweets, allow me to show you.” The director stated he would be willing to meet Elon Musk anywhere, “Earth or space,” however it should be in a place where the multibillionaire can see what the WFP has in place as far as people, processes, and technology.
Beasley concluded, “I will bring the plan, and open books.”
For now, things have not developed further. Though hopefully our world’s richest person and the UN can find some kind of feasible solution to international humanitarian issues.
