Actress Angela Bassett revealed the best part of working on 9-1-1.
In an interview with Assignment X, the executive producer and star spoke about her favorite part of the job.
“Always the acting,” Bassett shared. “Showing up every day, my cast mates, the crew, interesting stories, very interesting stories, and scenarios to try to bring life to, and hope that they’re interesting.”
Similarly, the reason that she took the role was because of her past work with Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuck and Tim Minear. Bassett was featured on American Horror Story for four seasons with the trio. She told Deadline that the characters that they wrote and created for her were “always very intriguing, very different from something I had done before. “
Her goal as an actress is to always be creative and challenged by your work. She wants to make sure that she works with great people who believe the same. At the end of the day, she wants to make sure that a show resonates with its audience. Becoming an executive producer poses different challenges.
“I think in the past, coming on as an actor, you get the script, you read it— ‘OK, well how can I have some fun with this character? What can I do?’ But because I came on as an EP, I was able to have a different sort of relationship this time around, able to be in communication about, does this ring true about my character? Would I find myself in this situation?” she explained. “I was able to do that early on, because the writers were still figuring it out themselves. I’m appreciating having that opportunity.”
‘9-1-1’ Season 5
Off-screen, 9-1-1 made some big changes to its actors’ paychecks.
Deadline reported that Bassett, who plays the character of Athena, will be making over $450,000 per episode. This makes her one of the highest-paid actors (male or female) in network television. Additionally, her salary may be the most money a Black actress has made on a network drama series.
Kenneth Choi, Rockmond Dunbar, Aisha Hinds, Ryan Guzman, and Oliver Stark will also be receiving bigger paychecks. Each actor will bring in approximately $80,000 per episode and potentially $100,000 for Season 6 episodes.
