‘9-1-1’: Full Recap of Season 5, Episode 3

9-1-1 featured Athena Grant Nash as her bravest, smartest self Monday night as she desperately tried to find her kidnapped son.

Athena (Angela Bassett) was in hot pursuit of serial rapist Jeffrey, who had a five-day jump on everyone. With power out all over the city, that’s how long it took before anyone realized that he wasn’t in police custody. Instead, he had time to sneak by Athena’s house, where her ex-husband and son were hosting a party. They weren’t celebrating anything. Rather, Athena’s house had food and a generator, so the neighbors were welcomed for a hot meal and something cold to drink.

Jeffrey took Harry and stashed him in the trunk of his car. He still had Lou’s police ID, after leaving Lou for dead in the season premiere. Athena soon realized Jeffrey had her son. She received a phone call. Harry was on the line. But soon, Jeffrey was talking to Athena, telling her he planned to take something away from Athena the way she took something from him.

Athena took ex-husband Michael with her to find Harry. And that’s when 9-1-1 had a funny moment. Michael asked what Jeffrey was talking about, what did Athena take from Jeffrey?

Athena said: “His junk. … His magic wand, I shot it off.”

This 9-1-1 Situation Ended Happily; Other Storylines Didn’t

As 9-1-1 continued, Athena did something more to Jeffrey. She eventually tracked him down, thanks to help from her daughter May. She found a video on social media of an officer acting badly. That was Jeffrey pretending to be a policeman. Once they tracked down Jeffrey, Athena shot and killed him when he threatened Bobby. Still, they were able to find Harry, who’d been stashed behind a wall.

And that was about the only 9-1-1 happy ending.

There was a heartbreaking scene at the end of the episode. Chimney received a video message from Maddie, who dropped their baby off at the 118 station. She said:

“I’m sure that you are confused, hurt and probably really scared. I don’t know what to say. You don’t need to go to the police or come looking for me. I’m not in any danger and no no one is making me dong this. Jee-Yun is not safe with me, not now and maybe [not ever]. I know that you’re going to take really good care of her, and she’s better off without me. I love you; love both of you. And I’m really sorry.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Maddie, recently gave birth. 9-1-1 producers hinted that Maddie would be having post-partum issues on the show. It’s unclear how many episodes Hewitt will be in this season.

Meanwhile, Eddie broke up with Ana, giving her the “We need to talk” speech. Everyone could see that coming, considering their relationship gave him an anxiety attack in the premiere.

But probably the most important detail is this one — the power is back on in Los Angeles. So that means 9-1-1 officially ended its three-part blackout storyline.

Next week’s episode is called Home and Away. A truck will crash into a high school homecoming parade. Harry still is suffering mentally from his kidnapping. And then there’s Chimney who now is dealing with a baby girl on his own.
