Make no mistake about it — playing Evan Buckley on 9-1-1 has given actor Oliver Stark a brand new respect for first responders.

Oliver Stark has been playing the role of young firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley on 9-1-1 since the show started back in 2018. For those who haven’t watched it before, the series follows the lives of the first responders in Los Angeles, California. That group includes police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and dispatchers. In addition to 9-1-1, Stark is known for being a series regular in AMC’s Into the Badlands. He plays Ryder in that show. The 30-year-old is a native of London, England, and has also made appearances in British shows Luther and Casualty as well.

However, just because he has gotten famous playing a first responder on TV, doesn’t mean that he is one in real life. As a matter of fact, before playing the role of Buck, Stark didn’t really understand just how difficult a job being a first responder really is.

He spoke to Brief Take in 2018 about the theme of the show. Not only that, but he also has learned to appreciate America’s first responders even more since playing Buck.

“It’s funny, you used the term ‘problem solving’,” he said. “That’s one of the things that I have come to appreciate about and respect about first responders, that I never really had in a conscious way before. The idea that every emergency call that they go on is completely individual and unique.”

‘9-1-1’ Star Happy to Shine a Light on First Responders

There is certainly no denying how humble of a guy Oliver Stark is. He is incredibly charming on the show. But it also seems he knows exactly what to say in a real-life interview as well. The young actor gives all the credit to our nation’s first responders.

There was one thing that he made sure to point out during the interview. That is that at every scene, there is a problem of some kind that needs to be solved.

“There’s a book of rules and things that you are meant to do. But every time they go out there’s a problem to be solved,” he continued. “How are they going to get into this building? How are they going to apprehend this individual?”

It’s definitely a great point from Stark. The 9-1-1 star also shined a light on the first responders in California. Many of which have been fighting wildfires over the last several years.

“First responders right now, especially with the California wildfires, are doing so much,” he said. “I think that the show has come along at a very good time to shine that light and raise that awareness.”
