It turns out that being a parent in real life can actually help out quite a bit when acting out the role of a parent on TV. Just ask 9-1-1 star, Rockmond Dunbar.
If you don’t already know who Rockmond Dunbar is, there is probably a good chance you’d know him if you saw him. After all, he has appeared in several big-time TV shows. You may remember him from his role as Baines on the NBC series Earth 2. Or maybe you recognize him from the Showtime family drama Soul Food. No? What about as Benjamin Miles “C-Note” Franklin on the FOX crime drama Prison Break? Eli Roosevelt on the FX Drama Series Sons of Anarchy? Those are some of his roles, just to name a few.
But nowadays, Dunbar portrays the role of Michael Grant on the Fox series 9-1-1. The show first premiered back on January 3 of 2018. And lucky for all of us, Dunbar sat down with Assignment X for an interview just a couple of months after that. He spoke about what it’s like to play the father of two children on the show, one of whom is often very unnerved.
“You know what?” Dunbar responded. “I’m a dad of three, sometimes my kids can be a little unnerved.”
The 9-1-1 star has a good point here. This is probably a message that all parents can relate to in one way or another.
‘9-1-1’ Star Rockmond Dunbar Excited to Work With Kids
The message in this interview just goes to show that Dunbar, without a doubt, is a man of many talents. But maybe his best talent is just simply being a dad. It turns out that talent actually helps him when he goes to work.
“I know how it is, I’m in the trenches right now,” he said at the time. “I have three kids under the age of four, so yeah, you can only imagine the stresses and everything that goes with that.”
In the show, Dunbar plays Michael Grant, of course. He is formerly an architect and is the current Home Owner’s Association President in Los Angeles. He was married to his wife Athena for fourteen years. That was before he ultimately came out as gay. But he and his ex-wife have two children together in Harry and May. And the 9-1-1 star said that he loved working with those two kids because they were so talented.
“I’m super excited, and the kids are so great,” he admitted. “They’re such good actors. It’s so nice to work with kids that are good actors.”
The next episode of 9-1-1 will air on Monday at 8 p.m. on FOX. Make sure to stay up-to-date right here on Outsider for all of the latest recaps.
