Academy Awards 2021: Glenn Close Continues Historic Losing Streak, But Deserves an Award For Her Epic ‘Da Butt’ Performance

Glenn Close lost her eighth chance to take home a golden statue at the Academy Awards Sunday, but she won over the internet with her dance moves. The Hillbilly Elegy actress provided one of the most interesting moments in a night full of odd moments.

It happened late in the show when comedian Lil Rel Howery asked audience members about songs that had been snubbed for Academy Awards, Yahoo said. After stopping at a few different tables he finally gets to Close. Howery says he feels bad because there’s no way the 74-year-old will know “Da Butt” from Spike Lee’s School Daze. But to everyone’s shock, she knew it chapter and verse.

“Wait a second… I know, that’s ‘Da Butt!’” Close said. “‘Da Butt’ was a classic song by the great Washington, D.C. go-go band E.U. So, shout-outs to Sugar Bear and the whole backyard band. … I remember this, so Spike Lee had it written for his brilliant movie, School Daze. And my friends at the Oscars, um, missed it. And it wasn’t nominated so it couldn’t have won which I think is just an eff’in tragedy.”

To prove her bona fides she even got up and danced “Da Butt,” leading to about a million tweets.

“I did not have Glenn close doing da butt on my Oscar bingo card but here we are,” tweeted author Roxane Gay.

“Glenn Close just straight dropped the EU knowledge at the #Oscars? What?!! DC, rep it! Now, bring the statehood,” actor Jeffrey Wright tweeted.

But unfortunately, Glenn Close doesn’t know “Da Butt” as well as we were led to believe. The segment was scripted, the LA Times confirmed.

Close is now tied with Peter O’Toole for most nominations without a win with 8.

Glenn Close Was High-Point of Academy Awards

The 93rd Academy Awards were mostly an uneventful ceremony that was spread out across the globe because of COVID-19. But what was one of the most baffling moments from the night was when directors pushed the Best Actor category to the end of the telecast.

This seemed to foretell that Chadwick Boseman would win Best Actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman, best known for his turn as Black Panther in the Marvel films, died of colon cancer last year. He would win the award, and there would be an extended montage about his life. Or at least that what’s people expected.

But when the category was announced, Anthony Hopkins’s name was called for his role in won for The Father. But Hopkins was so sure he wouldn’t win he didn’t even attend the ceremony either in person or virtually.

Fans were not happy.

“This is the problem with Hollywood, let us be honest the Oscars milked Chadwick’s death to the penny and then snubbed him from his glory. Like really, play soul music, give out NFTs on his image, and then rearrange the show to accommodate the best actor and then snub. Typical,” one person tweeted.

Los Angeles Times editor Matt Brennan tweeted, “That’s the worst TV ending since Game of Thrones.”

Ouch.
